An elegant work “escape” for lifestyle blogger Erin Hiemstra

Long before working from home became commonplace, design and lifestyle blogger Erin Hiemstra had plans to create her dream home office “oasis.” As part of her backyard makeover, she installed a prefab, free-standing structure to serve as her at-home work retreat.
To optimize the studio’s small footprint, just 10 feet by 10 feet, Erin knew she wanted a large, built-in desk to provide functionality and complement the space’s modern aesthetic.

“The couch or the bed just really don’t cut it when you’re doing 9-5 without leaving the house.”

How California Closets did it
Erin worked virtually with California Closets San Francisco design consultant Corinne Cronin to bring her work-from-home vision to life. They paired a large, black L-shaped desk with an upper shelf — both from the Virtuoso collection, which appears to float — that Erin uses to display art, lighting, and ceramics that add personality to the room. The built-in, LED lights provide plenty of light, eliminating the need (and expense) of overhead lighting.
The pairing of a light woodgrain finish and black accents adds dimension — and a touch of drama — to this enviable workspace.

“I love the mix of light wood with dramatic black accents. The black glass desktop adds a bit of sexiness.”

Final result
Erin’s completed space is much more than an inspiring office. It also serves as her yoga studio (for Zoom classes) and a self-care nook for meditation and daily rituals. The inviting and organized retreat now helps Erin balance her creative work hours with time to sit and be still.
