A glamorous closet for star ballerina Misty Copeland
When star ballerina Misty Copeland and her husband Ulu Evans were house hunting for the first home they would own together as a couple, a dedicated dressing room was key. Although not a self-described “girly-girl” Misty’s high-profile career requires dressing up for red carpets, galas, and making guest appearances. She wanted an elegant space where she could be alone, have her makeup done, and get dressed. To create her dream space, she tapped California Closets New York for help.
“[My dressing room] was really important to me when picking out the home we wanted to purchase. I wanted to make a space that I could have that was reminiscent of old Hollywood and really glamorous.”
How California Closets did it
Working with California Closets design consultant Megan Garcia and interior designer Brigette Romanek, Misty transformed an extra bedroom in her New York City apartment into a walk-in closet/dressing room that reflects “relaxed grandeur, not precious, pretty, dreamy.”
Open cabinets with matte gold hanging rods display her gorgeous collection of dresses, while a panel of shoe shelves showcase her artful stilettos. A large island in the middle of the room serves as a spot for hair and makeup with ample natural light from the room’s windows. Serving as another fun feature, a panel of three mirrored cabinets conceals more shoe and bag storage and transforms into a three-way mirror so Misty can see an outfit from every angle.
“Working with California Closets was great. We tried to give her exactly what she needs and what she wants. There is a place for dresses, for shoes, full-length mirrors, a generously sized island, and a spot for glam with good natural light...a lot of thought went into it.”

“When I was a little girl, I remember seeing [Mariah Carey’s] dressing room and thinking 'is that something that a little biracial girl that grew up poor could really have?' Especially as a black woman, I think it’s really powerful to be able to stand in this room and feel so proud of it.”
Final result
With its champagne pink, velvet walls and white cabinetry, this walk-in closet is both serene and chic. It’s a beautiful backdrop for Misty to store and display her wardrobe, get dressed up in true fairytale style, and enjoy her hard-earned success.
